6 Years with a Clear Point of You and a Bit of Courage

MY HISTORY — ORIGINALLY POSTED MARCH 10, 2019 ON INSTAGRAM@THEPOINTOFYOU

6 years ago today I returned to Portland — exhausted, scared and with less than $2k in my bank account — after a "failed” attempt to run away from my own work, return to where I grew up and get a job. It took me 8 months, working 18 hour days on any projects I could scrape together, and sending resume after resume, before I finally learned that I was completely missing the point. The “work” I was seeking was my own, and I was NOT going to find it in the Silicon Valley, or anywhere else outside of myself, because it was mine to bring to the world.

One reason I’d walked away from my own work, was that I was missing the camaraderie of a team, so I restarted my business by floating the possibility of a bi-weekly Business Design Group by a handful of previous clients. The idea was that we would share with each other what we’re working on and our challenges and support each other in using our own Points of You to help us “get over ourselves” and create the businesses and lives we desire!

EVERYONE I asked responded enthusiastically, “Yes! Count me in! When can we start?” Funny, I then spent days “trying” to write an invitation to something that everyone had already agreed to. The surprising gift I got from this exercise was a Freudian slip. Instead of typing “Point of View,” I unknowingly typed “Point of You” for the first time ever. I had no idea what beautiful new places this “uncovery” was going to take me.

Today, my work is clear and my business is solid, with significant potential for expansion on the horizon. And, this year, I’ve started making monthly visits to Sacramento, to spend precious time with my parents and walk along the beautiful river, that still feels more like home to me than anyplace in the world. What a difference 6 years, a clear Point of You and a bit of courage can make!

THANK YOU to all of you who let me co-conspire with you during this time. I am forever grateful for your trust, support, friendship, encouragement and love. xo
