Can We Please Just “Get Over Our selves”
MY HISTORY — ORIGINALLY POSTED FEBRUARY 26, 2022 ON INSTAGRAM@THEPOINTOFYOU
8/20/2025 NOTE:
On February 26, 2022, seeing an image of visibly emotion Ukrainian women, sitting inside a van, holding guns, struck a deep cord of grief and fear within me … the same deep pain I always feel whenever human equality and dignity is being violated by selfish, greedy, power-hungry, self-important (usually) men. For most of my life, a significant aspect of anorexia for me was using hunger to try to control this debilitating fear and pain. I have spent a lifetime figuring out why human beings treat each other with such cruelty and complete disregard and how this could change.
My favorite book genre book has always been biography, and I recently realized that the ones still sitting on my bookshelf are those of Ghandhi, Martin Luther King Junior, and Nelson Mandela, as well as the book “Wild Swans,” about a Chinese grandmother, mother and daughter (the author) during the “cultural revolution” in China. Any wonder my brand ended up becoming “R[LOVE]UTION? Although I didn’t specifically state it in this very raw-in-the-moment video, in my heart I speak for ALL human beings whose inherent rights and dignity have been and continue to be extremely and overtly violated.
Five years later, in this video, I could just exchange the name of the Russian President with that of the current President of the U.S. … and the Prime Minister of Israel. The ongoing genocide in Gaza, and the events escalating daily in the U.S., are horrifying. Becoming more aware of the history that has led up to this point, that is currently being systematically erased and rewritten, is both humbling and devastating.
To sit down and record and then share this video took a huge leap in “getting over my (ego)-self” (the one who is supposed to just disappear) and the fear of what people would think of me. It uses the invasion of Ukraine as a backdrop for understanding the ubiquitous, subconscious ways that every single one of us ends up diminishing others because our egos need to PROVE that we are “not” bad or wrong, “not” left out, “not” weak or vulnerable, “not” selfish or ungrateful, “not” conforming, “not” powerless, “not” unwanted or unloved, “not” mediocre, “not” boring, “not” ignorant, “not” insignificant, or “not” overruled … by making others bad or wrong, left out, weak or vulnerable, selfish or ungrateful, conforming, powerless, unwanted or unloved, mediocre, boring, ignorant, insignificant or overruled.
There’s more in the video.
