Awakening My Explorer-Artist in Mexico

MY HISTORY — ORIGINALLY POSTED FEBRUARY 9-19, 2022 ON INSTAGRAM@THEPOINTOFYOU

February 9, 2022
Bryan and I are back from a week of soul-nourishing and inspiring adventures, with my cousin @valteters and her husband John, along the East Cape of Baja California Sur, Mexico. Such wonder-full experiences:

ATV-ing through the arroyos down to pristine beaches, that we had all to ourselves.

Photographing and gathering beach treasures of shells and bones and stones.

Visiting the marine reserve, Parco Nacional Cabo Pulmo and (on a different beach) the simple turtle rookery, where hundreds of thousands of turtle eggs are protected, so the baby turtles can hatch and make their way to the sea.

Enjoying quesadillas con huitlacoche (delicious and fascinating!), fresh ceviche and fish tacos, with margaritas or cold beer.

Driving up and over “Devils Spine,” through some mind-blowing road work.

Soaking in natural hot springs, near Santiago.

Feeding carrots to donkeys along dirt roads.

Getting off land, out into the Sea of Cortez, and witnessing the extraordinary majesty and play of whale moms, babies and companions.

Enjoying sunrises and sunsets, birds bathing and whales spouting and frolicking, from the patios of my cousin’s beautiful casa + casita.

Waking to whales' tale-splashing at night.

Making new friends.

Exploring old cemeteries.

And, lastly, transporting two adorable 3-month old puppies for adoption in Portland, through Cortez Rescue.

This trip has reawakened and inspired the explorer-artist in me. Going to choose to live life as her, from now on.

One of the highlights of our trip was collaborating with Cortez Rescue to transport two 3-month-old sibling puppies back to Portland for adoption, here.

The process was easy and seamless. We gave Cortez Rescue our flight details. They made sure the plane we were on had pressurized/heated cargo areas for transporting animals safely and notified the airlines (on our behalf) that we would be traveling with pets. The two puppies, Wafi and West, were dropped off to us at the airport, in separate kennels, with all of their paperwork (confirmation of shots, etc) ready to go. We got to spend a few minutes meeting them (wish we had more time!), then checked in for our flight, with them.

When we arrived in Portland, we picked up the puppies in the oversized baggage area, and took them with us through customs, showing the paperwork and answering simple questions. We were met at international arrivals by the Portland representative (thanks CJ!), played with the puppies a little (wish we had more time!) and handed them off.

The next day, we got an adorable photo, letting us know that Wafi and West were doing great! Wafi was adopted a few days later. West still needs to put on a few pounds (slowly), so we got to go see her and play with her a few days ago (thanks CJ!) So precious! If you’re interested in adopting her, I’d be happy to connect you!

*** UPDATE: West has just been adopted! ***

Check out the amazing work that Cortez Rescue is doing … both heartbreaking and heartwarming! If you happen to be traveling in Baja California Sur, and are interested in helping rescue pups to find homes, I encourage you to reach out. Bryan and I will be going back to Baja in June and will definitely offer to transport pups, again!

Thanks Cortez Rescue team for all you do and for giving us the opportunity to participate in your rescue work!
💓🐶🐾 (And thanks cousin Val for making us aware of this opportunity and encouraging us!)
